It’s not just about our geographic location — the great Bay Area weather, our proximity to nature, our identity as the gateway to the Pacific Rim. It’s not just about technology — though the Bay Area is the birthplace of the modern Internet, and one of the most wired cities in the world. And it’s not just about our culture — although few cities in the world are as energetic, as sustainable, as socially aware, and as open to new ideas and new people.

It’s about all these things. But there is more to San Francisco than its obvious virtues. The City is large and complicated, and with great diversity of race, class, and income level, it provides an ideal setting for the work of a University devoted to shaping a better world.

In keeping with our mission, USF supports and partners with many community organizations for the betterment of the city, and we encourage our students to use San Francisco as a laboratory for service learning and applied academics.

In short, the University and the City are closely intertwined, both culturally and geographically. Our students benefit from the city, and the city benefits from our students.
